Went for a paddle down the Portage River in Ottawa County, OH. The river comes within about 1/4mi from my house, and I've always wanted to paddle it. It's a tough river to find a suitable launching spot, as it's lined almost completely with large boulders. My wife's employer's husband recently made a ramp near her work, so I figured I'd take advantage of it! The ramp is in downtown Oak Harbor, OH. I paddled 3.4mi to a small campground near my house that had a rough boat ramp. I encountered quite a few cranes (always a cool sight), and a ton of ducks. I paddled through what must have been 75 ducks. They tolerate me coming fairly close until they get spooked, then it's a flurry of wings. There isn't much current to the river, as we haven't had a good rain in weeks. The river's fairly wide (~200'), and offers quite a few obstacles (downed trees, muddly flats, large islands). Thanks to my wife for dropping me off and picking me back up! |
